“You two had such a lovely time together the other day. I’m sure you’ll hear from him again,” Emily said, her pretty face smiling from the screen of Maggie’s phone.
“It’s been six days. If he’d wanted to get back in touch, he would have done so by now.” Maggie sighed.
“Perhaps he doesn’t want to seem too eager. Or he’s been traveling. You know how busy these billionaires are.”
“Or perhaps he’s just not into me.”
“That’s not what you told me when you got back from the garden on Saturday.”
“What do you mean? What did I tell you?”
“You said the chemistry between the two of you was so strong that it felt like you got lost in each other’s eyes as you spoke.”
“That’s true, but perhaps I wanted it so badly that I imagined it. He would call me if he wanted to.”
“You didn’t call him either,” Emily reminded her.
“I reached out to tell him about his dad. Seeking him again would be too much. Let’s just change the subject, please. Talking about this guy all the time won’t help me stop thinking about him.”
“Okay, you’ll see.”
“No, you’ll see,” Maggie retorted.
“Seriously, Mags! What were the chances of your dad knowing his dad? Nobody can convince me that’s just a meaningless coincidence.”
“I wish you were right. I really do. But—”
“Are you Maggie Dawson?” a tall, beautiful red-haired woman asked as she approached Maggie’s table at the coffee shop.
“Emily, I’ll call you later. My interviewees have just arrived,” Maggie said into the phone and stood up. “Bethany?”
“Yes.” The girl smiled, shaking Maggie’s hand. “This is Elena, my colleague from Spain.”
“Yes, I remember. It’s a pleasure. Thank you so much for coming.”
Maggie was working on an article about challenging the promotion of thinness in the modeling industry. A few days before, she had interviewed a researcher from Columbia University who was in charge of a study about eating disorders among models, and she had put her in touch with two young women who had struggled with unhealthy weight control practices.
“We’re sorry we’re late,” Bethany said. “The casting call lasted longer than we expected.”
“No problem. What can I get you?” Maggie offered.
“I’m fine. Thanks,” said Elena.
“Me too. We had to wait for more than three hours, so we had a coffee and a snack at the agency,” Bethany explained.
“You must be tired, and I don’t want to waste your time. So, let’s get straight into it. As I briefly mentioned in our correspondence, there’s been this new study that shows that over 62 percent of models reported—”
“Ask her,” Elena said in a low voice, glancing at Bethany.
Bethany giggled and elbowed her friend. “Before we get started, there’s something we’d like to ask, if you don’t mind.”
“Sure. Would you like me to clarify something about the scope of the article?” Maggie asked.
“No, no, that’s clear. There’s something else.” The woman hesitated. “You’re the person who interviewed the guy who founded Mine to Love, right? Andrew Knight.”
Maggie’s jaw dropped in shock. “Yes, I did. Why?”
The women exchanged a mischievous look.
